But the most exciting ceremony is the traditional art of sabrage\, using an authentic saber to open a bottle of sparkling wine. The legend behind sabrage is connected to The French Revolution when Napoleon\, a noted fan of Champagne\, would take victorious rides through the countryside. As he and his cavalry passed through the towns\, villagers lined the streets to toss them bottles of Champagne in celebration. Unable to open the bottles by hand from their horses\, the soldiers simply struck them open using their sabers. \nIn the Breathless sabrage experience\, receive one-on-one instruction from our experienced guide who will teach you the proper technique of opening a bottle of Champagne using impact from the blunt side of a saber. DESCRIPTION:  \n \n  \nThe Lowest Pair at The Elephant in the Room Pub in Healdsburg\nKendl Winter and Palmer T. Lee are two kindred spirits who first met on the banks of the Mississippi while touring the Midwest festival circuit. Born and raised in Arkansas\, Winter found herself drawn to the evergreens and damp air of the Pacific Northwest\, as well as the boundless music scene of Olympia\, Washington. She released three solo records on Olympia-based indie label\, K Records\, and performed in ramblin’ folk bands and anarchic punk bands before serendipitously meeting Palmer T. Lee in 2013. Lee had built his first banjo when he was 19 from pieces he inherited and began cutting his teeth fronting Minneapolis string bands before convincing Winter that they should form a banjo duo. As he and his cavalry passed through the towns\, villagers lined the streets to toss them bottles of Champagne in celebration. Unable to open the bottles by hand from their horses\, the soldiers simply struck them open using their sabers. \nIn the Breathless sabrage experience\, receive one-on-one instruction from our experienced guide who will teach you the proper technique of opening a bottle of Champagne using impact from the blunt side of a saber. The purpose of this annual family event is to raise scholarship money to fund college scholarships for our local high school seniors. Each year over $10\,000 in scholarships is awarded to our local kids. This event not only benefits the students of our community\, but it also a great time for people to gather for some fun morning activities with the family. \nThe run takes place in the Heart of Sonoma County’s Wine Country; Healdsburg. Both the 10K and 3K courses begin and end at the Historic Healdsburg Downtown Plaza. Come and enjoy a day in the wine country with great restaurants\, world class wineries\, and the beautiful Russian River. The 10K course travels through quaint neighborhoods and then out around the challenging Fitch Mountain along the Russian River\, finally ending back downtown.
