ÆRENA Galleries & Gardens invites you to celebrate a new collection of paintings Till The Tree Could Bear No More by Kate Salenfriend. At her home in Napa Valley, where are and nature abound, Salenfriend’s interpretation of our natural world compliements the agrarian beauty that surrounds her. Layers of gold, copper and silver-colored leafing that she uses to create her stunning landscapes invite you to an imagined place. The interaction between ambient light and the delicate metal leaf mimics nature’s transitional seasonality and simultaneously pivots into fantasy. In her twenty-plus years of painting, she has developed a deep and lasting sensitivity to time of day, season and atmosphere.

Aligning with Robert Frost’s poem Birches, Salenfriend presents an escape from the hard rationality of our modern world, if only for a moment. As the protagonist climbs the birch, he is climbing toward “heaven” or a place where his imagination can be free. The narrator explains that climbing a birch is an opportunity to “get away from earth awhile / And then come back to it and begin over.” The alchemy resulting from Salenfriend’s experiences in the Northern California landscape and her solid connection to the environment is evident when taking in these scenes. Spending time in her birch forects encourages us to reach beyond our everyday life and reach into the bliss of natures’s reveries.
