Lavay Smith – Tuesday Plaza Concerts

If you are looking for a musical act that delivers pure, unadulterated retro-cool, Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers are the real deal. Fronted by the sultry, charismatic “Queen of Classic Jazz & Blues,” Lavay Smith, this San Francisco-born powerhouse band beautifully resurrects the brassy, swinging sounds of the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. Backed by a world-class horn section and a tight rhythm unit, they seamlessly weave together jump blues, bebop, and New Orleans R&B. Their lyrics are often delightfully cheeky, flirty, and packed with clever double-entendres, but it’s all grounded in serious, top-tier musicianship. If you appreciate sizzling jazz solos, a sultry atmosphere, and music that feels like a late-night cocktail hour in a vintage lounge, this band serves it up hot.

HiH Hint: You can reserve your spot by setting out chairs after 4pm. Bring a jacket and a hat, because once the sun ducks behind the buildings along Healdsburg Avenue the temperature drops faster than a rap artist’s mic. Oh yeah, ear plugs may be handy to have around. Food is always nearby. Clean bathrooms are a half-block away at the Healdsburg Police Department (238 Center Street), and if you have trouble finding it just cause a ruckus and nice police officers will personally escort you there.
