Mike Officer started his love affair with wine at an early age. When he was 19 years old and living with his sister for the summer, she offered him a glass of Riesling wine. “That was it for me”, Mike explains. He spent the rest of that evening trying different wines and learning about the different varietals his sister shared with him. Today, Mike is cofounder of the “Historic Vineyard Society” and continues his love affair with wine at Carlisle Winery.
His love of wine continued throughout college during which time he attended many wine tastings and taught a wine appreciation course at the college. After graduation, he pursued his chosen field in software design. It was during this time that he decided he needed to choose a career path he could pour his passion into. Clearly winemaking was at the top of his list of considerations.
He began making Zinfandel wines at home and, over time, migrated to making an entire barrel of wine each vintage. He was producing some 300 cases of homemade wine by the late 1990s and began winning amateur competition medals for his wines.
In 1998, he and his partner Kendall began Carlisle Winery and Vineyards with what little life savings they had. By the year 2000, they had grown in to around 20 thousand cases of wine. It was at this time that Mike officially left the software field and began pursuit of his real life’s dream; that of making small lots of world-class wines from the finest Vineyards they could discover throughout California.
Today Carlisle has grown to almost 10,000 cases of wine in annual production. Their accolades are shared by both wine lovers and wine critics alike.
