Landscape Painting Outdoors in Gouache at Healdsburg’s Riverside Park

Course description: This one-day “en plein air” or outdoor workshop with gouache (opaque watercolor) will be held at the Riverfront Regional Park in Windsor by instructor Sergio Lopez. Gouache is a fun and versatile water-based medium, well-suited for painting on location.

Techniques will include setting up an outdoor easel, choosing a landscape composition, paint handling, mixing a wide range of colors from a simplified palette, and creating textures for trees, grasses, and other landscape elements while learning how to depict light and color. The workshop will feature both a demo painting by the instructor and individual instruction.

Materials: You may purchase your own from most art suppliers such as Riley Street in Santa Rosa or Jerry’s Artarama and Trekell online. You may also purchase the day of class from Healdsburg Center for the Arts

Titanium White (2 oz.), Cadmium Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Permanent Yellow Deep, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, Spectrum Violet, Ultramarine Blue, Payne’s Gray, Sap Green, Viridian, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber

Princeton Snap 1” Stroke, Princeton Snap 3/4” Stroke, Princeton 4050ST ½” Stroke, Trekell 1000 Crimson Taklon Flats (1 small, 1 medium)

Strathmore Visual Journal, watercolor 140lb, or watercolor paper size between 6×8 and 8×10

.Airtight paint storage, ceramic mixing palette, small spray bottle, cotton rags for cleaning and wiping brushes, water container,

Outdoor easel with a shelf or pochade box (if you don’t have an outdoor easel, HCA has one or two you may borrow).

Optional but recommended: clamps, brush case, drawing tools, low-tack artist tape.
